Also commonly known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is a mild and safe sedative administered through a soft rubber hood that is fitted passively over the nose. For nitrous oxide to work effectively, your child will need to breathe freely through their nose. It can help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures by relieving anxiety, pain, and reducing the gag reflex. The calming effect of nitrous oxide may give children a sensation of warmth or tingling. It begins working within a few minutes and has no lasting effects. Your child will remain awake and able to respond normally. While uncommon, a possible side effect is nausea or vomiting. Some children may also feel sleepy or have a mild headache. To reduce the risk of nausea, it is advised to avoid large meals beforehand. We will monitor your child’s reaction throughout treatment and adjust the nitrous level to minimize risks.
