Sealants are a preventative treatment in which a thin, protective coating made from filling material is applied to the chewing surfaces of adult molars. These teeth have deep grooves and pits that easily trap food particles and bacteria, making them more vulnerable to decay. Sealants form a smooth barrier over these areas to help prevent plaque and food from getting stuck and causing cavities. The process is simple, painless, and can benefit anyone but especially those with cavity-prone teeth or at higher risk of developing cavities. Initially after placement, the bite may feel different and will adjust in a few days. The average sealant lasts 2-4 years, but can last for many years depending on the patient’s nutritional and parafunctional habits. Sealants can be reapplied when they are worn down.
